This sequence reflects the same conservative decision order used by Avenblu’s pool workflow. It is not a universal dosing prescription: the product label, pool condition, test quality, and safety situation still control the actual action.

  1. Make the situation safe

    Keep swimmers out when water is opaque, contamination is severe, or a chemical incident may have occurred.

  2. Verify a fresh test

    Confirm the sample, test method, pool volume, recent dosing, and whether circulation is actually working.

  3. Address major pH concerns

    Very high or low pH can change the rest of the plan. Follow the product label and never combine acid and chlorine.

  4. Plan sanitizer with context

    Once the immediate sanitizer and pH picture is stable, consider TA, CH, temperature, salt, surface, and scale risk.

Chlorine and stabilizer

A chlorine number needs CYA and pH context

Free chlorine is the sanitizer available to do work. Combined chlorine is a clue that chlorine has reacted with contaminants. Cyanuric acid helps protect chlorine from sunlight, but as CYA rises, a higher FC reserve may be needed to maintain the same practical sanitizing strength.

That is why “my chlorine is 3 ppm” is not a complete diagnosis. A fresh CYA result, pH, CC, sunlight, recent swimmer load, and water condition change how the same FC result should be read.

Treat pH and its buffer as a pair

pH describes how acidic or basic the water is. TA helps the water resist sudden pH change. Chasing pH without checking TA can create a rebound; pushing TA without watching pH can create another swing. Use smaller, label-directed corrections and retest rather than forcing both numbers in one pass.
